JERSEY CITY, NJ… — NJCU WINS THIRD STRAIGHT, TOPS CITY TECH, 64-42

LATRESE McNAIR CLIMBS TO NINTH IN STEAL IN D-III HISTORY

Senior point guard LATRESE McNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) narrowly missed a triple-double, scoring 21 points, with nine steals and eight assists as the New Jersey City University women’s basketball team won its third consecutive game, cruising past New York College of Technology, 64-42, in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

After opening the year at 3-10, the Gothic Knights (7-11) have won four of their last five games, highlighted by the current three-game streak. City Tech drops its sixth consecutive game, falling to 9-12. It was the second ever meeting in a series NJCU leads 2-0, with the teams last playing in December 2004.

McNair was 6-of-6 from the line, and 3-of-7 from three-point range, scoring at least 20 for the third consecutive game. It was her sixth 20-point game of the season and the 12th of her career, and she increased her career scoring total to 1,133.

The nine steals gives her 440 in her illustrious career, as she vaulted over four players into ninth place in Division III history. She is the two-time defending national steals per game champion.

Junior power forward TIFFANY BOYD (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln), who ranks No. 2 in Division III in blocked shots, added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while rejecting eight blocks and six rebounds in just 16 minutes. Junior forward ARNESE GOODMAN (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) had 10 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward TRISHA SANON (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) had six boards and two blocks.

Junior forward Mareena Creary (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) had 13 points and six rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, and sophomore forward Kemi Owoseni (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Technical) added 12 points and six boards. Freshman center Tempestt Casey (Bronx, NY/Bronx Leadership) had a game-high 12 rebounds (10 defensive), while sophomore guard Dyshea Smiley (Bronx, NY/Bronx Leadership) grabbed nine caroms.

NJCU had a 26-14 margin in points in the paint and outscored City Tech on the fast-break, 15-2. City Tech shot just 20.3 percent overall (12-59). NJCU led 27-16 at the half.

City Tech, which did not attempt a three-pointer in the game, had 28 turnovers and only three assists.

NJCU gained a 7-6 lead at 14:35 of the first half and would never trail again. A 16-1 run over a span of 7:25 helped NJCU gain a 20-7, 13-point edge. Boyd scored eight points during the run, capped by three consecutive baskets at the end, and McNair added eight more, including two three-pointers.

City Tech was able to claw with 29-22 at 17:43 of the second period, but NJCU reeled off another huge run, this time a 15-0 chunk, and led by 22, 44-22 at 12:16. NJCU’s largest lead was 25 (62-37) with 2:49 remaining. McNair had six during that spurt and Boyd chipped in five.

NJCU will return to action on Wednesday, January 31, at 6 p.m. when it hosts Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division game at the JMAC. City Tech is in action again on Friday, February 2 at 5 p.m. at Hunter College.
