afternoon in the opening round of the Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday
Hoops Tournament on the campus of Hampden-Sydney University. The win snaps a
five-game losing skid for Albright as the Lions improve to 3-6 on the season,
while the Gothic Knights see their record slip to 5-5.
NJCU took an early 7-2 lead, but a 12-0 Albright run quickly erased that
deficit and gave the Lions a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the
contest. Leading 20-16 with 12:30 left in the half, Albright held the Knights
scoreless over the next nine minutes in a 16-0 run that saw he lead ballon to
20 points, 36-16, late in the half. NJCU managed a field goal and three free throws over the final three and a half minutes after the drought, but Albright held a 40-21 lead at the intermission.
Albright never allowed NJCU back into the game in the second half. The Lions' lead bounced between 13 and 21 points for most of the half, until the Knights pulled within 11, 68-57, on an Abraham Williams lay up with 1:47 to play in the game. Albright responded with five straight points to put the game out of reach as NJCU was never able to get the Lion lead into single digits.
Tom Murphy also had 17 points to equal Medoro's total and lead the Lions. Junior center Kyle Brudvig chipped in with 14 points for the Lions, who shot 50% from the floor in the contest. The Lions dominated the boards, collecting 58 rebounds to just 29 for the Knights. Kevin Tucker led NJCU with 21 points.
Albright will face Shenandoah, a 70-69 winner over Hampden-Sydney, in the championship game Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
