Junior swingman MAREENA CREARY (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points (9-10 on free throws), and added six rebounds. Freshman center TEMPESTT CASEY (Bronx Leadership / Bronx, NY) just missed a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. But sophomore forward KEMI OWOSENI (Brooklyn Tech / Brooklyn, NY), City Tech’s leading scorer at 13.0 ppg, was held scoreless by the Scarlet Raiders played tough inside, despite a lack of size in the post.
For the Scarlet Raiders, junior guard NERLANDE NICHOLAS (Columbia / Maplewood, NJ) added 16 points, which included a 6-6 night from the charity stripe and sophomore forward OLABIMPE FAGEYINBO (Parsippany Hills / Morris Plains, NJ) who had a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds.
Rutgers-Newark’s largest lead in the game was 17 points with 4:57 remaining in the first half (29-12), before settling for an 11-point margin at the break (29-18). The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to only five points less than three minutes into the second half (31-26) on a Creary jumper, but Rutgers-Newark went on an immediate 11-0 run over the next four minutes, capped by a Sanchez layup to put the game away.
The Yellow Jackets will head back into CUNYAC competition on Wednesday, January 17th as both the City Tech men and women will travel to John Jay College for a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 pm.
