DANA JOHN SCORES 20, HITS 100TH CAREER THREE-POINTER
Sophomore swingman DANA JOHN (Hillside, NJ/Pocono Mountain East (Pa.)) reached the 20-point plateau for the sixth time this season, and junior forward MARQUES HILL (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) netted his third double-double, as the New Jersey City University men’s basketball team improved to 7-1 in the month of January, cruising past New York City College of Technology, 76-58, in a non-conference game at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
NJCU wins its sixth consecutive game to improve to 12-7 overall, and extends its home court winning streak to eight games dating to last year. NJCU leads the all-time series, 2-0. City Tech (5-
16) had its two-game winning streak snapped.
John, coming off a career-high 31 points on Saturday, dropped 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, and connected for 5-of-11 from three-point range. He added nine rebounds in 31 minutes. NJCU is now 7-2 all-time when he scores at least 20. He entered the game with 99 career triples, and now has 104.
John is the sixth men’s player in NJCU history to reach 100 career three pointers. He is joined on the list by Mark Washington (2002-06; 160 threes), Jeff Jordan (1987-91; 125); Corey Johnson (1994-98; 114), Stefon Beck (1991-94; 109), and Omar Cooper (1994-96, 99-00; 108). John becomes the first player in NJCU history to record his 100th three-pointer as a sophomore.
Hill had 14 points (7-14 FG), 12 rebounds (eight offensive) and five assists, while sophomore guard KEVIN TUCKER (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris) had 11 points (4-8 FG; 2-5 3FG) and a game-high six assists in 15 minutes.
Also for NJCU, senior point guard ALEX MIRABEL (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) collected eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in 30 minutes. Senior center ABRAHAM WILLIAMS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) had six boards.
Three players reached double figures for the Yellow Jackets. Senior swingman Otis Saylee (New York, NY/Seward Park) had 16 points (6-12 FG), seven rebounds and three steals in 37 minutes. Sophomore forward Ryan Phillip (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) had 15 points (6-14 FG), six rebounds and four steals, playing all 40 minutes. Senior guard Kareem Hanley (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) finished with 12 points.
NJCU never trailed, after surging ahead 10-0, and extending the margin to 22-7 at 11:48. A 10-2 run by the Yellow Jackets to close the opening period made it close at the break, as NJCU led by five, 34-29. John’s 100th career three made it 7-0 exactly one minute into the game.
NJCU led 41-33 at 17:02 of the second half before a 12-3 streak put the Knights in front by 16, 52-36 at 13:36. City Tech drew within eight, 53-45, with 8:55 remaining, but a 16-3 tear sealed the win for the Knights, as NJCU’s lead swelled to 21, 69-48, with 5:56 left. NJCU hit three triples during the run, including two by Tucker. The 21-point cushion was NJCU’s largest lead of the night.
NJCU continued its hot three-point shooting, converting for 11-of-31. NJCU has canned 28 triples in its last two games.
NJCU returns to action on Wednesday, January 31 at 8 p.m. when
the Knights, who currently are in first place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference at 6-2, host Rutgers-Newark in a key league game at the JMAC. If Newark wins, it will tie the Knights for first place, but will have swept the season series. An NJCU win will open a two-game separation in the standings between the two schools. City Tech is off until Friday, February 2 when it visits Hunter College at 7 p.m.
