Western New England 81, Emmanuel 65

Montclair, NJ — Junior guard Ahmad Mosby (Jersey City, NJ/St. Anthony’s) scored a game-high 19 points to lead four players in double figures as Ramapo College scored five of the game’s seven points in a 77-74 victory over Montclair State in a New Jersey Athletic Conference intra-divisional matchup at Panzer Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore guard Tim Wesley (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) added 18 points while Omar Alston (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) had 16 and seven boards as the Roadrunners won their fourth straight while improving 13-3 overall, 5-1 in the conference’s North Division. It was also Ramapo’s fifth straight win at Panzer Gym.

Freshman forward Charles Miller (Linden, NJ/Linden) had 16 points and seven rebounds for Montclair State, which dropped its second straight and fell a game below .500 at 7-8 overall. The Red Hawks are now 1-4 in the North Division.

In a game that featured nine ties, Mosby came up with a big play as MSU had taken a 69-67 lead with 4:33 to go on a basket by Eric Sylvester (Orange, NJ/Orange). Ramapo came back the other way and tied the score as Wesley connected from short range. Mosby then stole the inbounds pass, put in a layup and was fouled to give Ramapo the lead. Mosby would add the free throw, but the Red Hawks forged the final tie as Ken Dudley (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) scored on a three-point play with his own , knotting the contest at 72-72 with 2:59 left.

Montclair State had a chance to take the lead, but missed a free throw. Ramapo would regain the lead with 1:46 to go as Shawn Frost (Newark, NJ/Our Lady of Good Counsel) put back a missed shot. Frost would add another layup with 1:12 to play for a 76-72 lead. Miller answered with two free throws to cut the deficit to two points with 52 ticks. The Red Hawks would get the ball back, but Mike Hern’s (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) three-pointer with hit off the front rim. Mosby collected the rebound and was fouled with eight seconds to go. He would hit the second attempt for the three-point margin.

Montclair State did get an opportunity to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Jonathan Arthur’s (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) three-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer.

Frost finished with eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks while Antoine Pryor (Elizabeth, NJ/St. Patrick’s) had 12 points. The Roadrunners, shot 48 percent from the field (30-of-62), and outrebounded the Red Hawks 47-34.

Arthur had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for Montclair State, which got 10 points from sophomore guard Garan Dickson (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia).

Both teams return to action on with conference road contests. The Red Hawks are in Union, NJ on Saturday, January 20 to face Kean University at the Harwood Arena at 3:00 pm. Next Wednesday (January 24) Ramapo will travel to Jersey City, NJ to face the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University in an 8:00 pm tip at the John J. Moore Athletic Center.
