Ithaca 64, Utica 55

Crown Heights, N.Y. — Baruch remained perfect in conference play with a 68-54 road victory on Friday night against the Cougars of Medgar Evers College.

The victory improves the Bearcats to 8-0 in CUNYAC and 13-6 overall, while Medgar Evers drop to 4-4 in CUNYAC and 7-11 overall.

The home side started the game with a pair of early 3-pointers from Tiffany Deputy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) and four baskets by Quandra Rogers (Nashville, AR/Nashville) to build a 15-7 advantage with 13:35 left until halftime.

The Bearcats responded over the next eight minutes to slowly cut the deficit and take the lead with a jumper by junior Naesha Tyler-Moore (Chicago, III./Rich Central) for a 24-23 lead.

They would never relinquish that advantage the rest of the game to go on to their 24th consecutive victory against conference opposition.

Junior Myleka Garnett (Seaside, Calif./Seaside) was key in the first half comeback with 14 points (5-7 fg, 4-4 ft) and three steals, while Tyler-Moore scored eight points (4-5 fg) before the intermission.

During the second half, the Bearcats scored the first six points, highlighted with consecutive layups by freshman Kaleia Davis (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman), to lead by their biggest margin of 18 points (46-28) just two minutes into the second half.

They led comfortably the rest of the way with the lead never dropping below 10 points to claim their 13th victory.

Garnett finished with a double-double of 22 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals, while Racquel Reid (Bronx, N.Y./Washington Irving) had 12 points and six rebounds. Tyler-Moore finished with 10 points and five steals.

The Bearcats defense scored 35 points off 31 turnovers (21 steals), and limited the Cougars to 34 percent shooting (21-61).

The women’s basketball team will return to action with a major conference road game on Wednesday, January 24, at 5:00 pm against John Jay College.
