Case Western Reserve 93, Carnegie Mellon 79

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (4-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) completed a CCIW-sweep of the Friday-Saturday, Dec. 1-2 CCIW/MIAA Men’s Basketball Classic at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis., with a 74-54 drubbing of No. 10 Calvin College (3-3) on Saturday. No. 30 Wheaton College (Ill., 4-2) upset No. 5 Hope (2-2), 73-70, in Saturday’s other game. On Friday, Carthage stunned Hope College, 71-65, with Wheaton College (Ill.) upsetting Calvin, 73-62.

Carthage roared out to a 17-3 lead in the opening seven minutes against Calvin. The Red Men extended their lead to 23 points, 36-13, at 6:35 and led by 20 at halftime, 45-25. Carthage led by 22 in the second half, 54-32, at 14:14 before the Knights almost made a game of things. Calvin pulled to within 12, 56-44, at 8:36 before the Red Men inched away in the final minutes to win by 20, 74-54. Carthage shot 58 percent (26-45), including 64 percent (16-25) in the first half. Calvin shot just 33 percent for the game (17-52) and just 23 percent in the opening period (6-26). Carthage’s Brian Schlemm scored a game-high 20 points on seven-of-10 field goals, including two-of-three from three-point range, along with four-of-seven from the free-throw line and seven rebounds. Milos Vukosavljevic had 14 points, Bill Shemerdiak 13 points, and Trey Bowens added 11 points. Caleb Veldhouse was the lone Calvin player in double figures with 10 points. Carthage travels to Beloit, Wis., on Saturday, Dec. 9 for a 3 p.m. non-conference game versus Beloit College at Flood Arena.
