Chicago 82, Brandeis 49

Hayward, Calif. — The women's basketball team knocked off tournament hosts Cal State-East Bay, 71-57, to capture third place in the Pioneers Tip-Off Classic on Saturday.

The Bearcats (3-3) led throughout most of the game and enjoyed a 31-25 advantage at halftime.

Junior center Dominique McClendon (Chicago, III/Seaside) had a strong first half with 10 points, five rebounds, and four blocks.

During the second half, Cal State - East Bay (1-3) made a run to get as close as 43-40 with 10:22 left, but the Bearcats responded with a 6-0 run to go back up, 49-40.

The lead reached double-digits in the final minute on a jumper junior guard Karlee Whipple (Lund, Nevada/Lund) for a 65-54 advantage with 45 seconds left.

The Bearcats defense was a big factor tonight, forcing 25 turnovers and allowing C.S.E.B. to shoot only 34.3 percent (23-67).

McLendon led all scorers with 20 points, seven rebounds, five blocks, four assists, and four steals.

Senior forward Racquel Reid (New York, N.Y./Washington Irving) scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while senior guard Jody Trapp (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) added 10 points and three steals.

Nicole Scott (Bear River, Calif.) led the tournament hosts with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Redlands defeated Chapman, 76-57, to win the tournament championship.

The Bearcats return to action this Tuesday to start their conference schedule with a 5:30 p.m. home game against John Jay.
