NEWARK, N.J. — Senior guard Philippe Slater (Newark, NJ/University HS) had a 15 of his game-high 17 points and freshman forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) notched a dozen of his career-high 16 points in the first half as Rutgers-Newark constructed a 52-38 lead then held on for a 93-87 non-conference men's basketball win over Farmingdale State in The Golden Dome.

The Scarlet Raiders (8-0) remained unbeaten and continued the best start in program history entering fall semester exam break while the Rams (5-2) saw their four-game winning streak snapped.

Back-to-back three-point jumpers by sophomore guard Laquan Jones (Newark, NJ/University) and Slater capped a 12-2 run which boosted the Raiders into a 32-25 lead with 6:44 left in the period. A layup by sophomore guard Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ/University) pushed the Rutgers-Newark lead to 40-37, but the Rams never stopped the pursuit.

Ten players scored for the Rams in the second period, led by the freshman guard trio of Merlin Bass (Queens, NY/Holy Cross), Terrence Howard (Queens, NY/Cardozo) and Tremain Gary (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) as Farmingdale clawed its way back into the game with a 20-9 run over the final 2:55 of the game. Bass, who notched all of his points during the final run, knocked down a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to trim the Raider lead to 91-87.

Slater iced the game with a pair of free throws with one tenth of a second left.

Fourteen of the 15 players used by Farmingdale scored while 10 of the 12 Raiders to play registered in the scoring column.
