The Scarlet Raiders (8-0) remained unbeaten and continued the best start in program history entering fall semester exam break while the Rams (5-2) saw their four-game winning streak snapped.
After falling behind 11-5 at the start of the contest, Singleton came off the bench for six quick points to ignite a 13-3 run, giving Rutgers-Newark an 18-14 lead with 12:59 left in the period. Back-to-back three-point jumpers by sophomore guard Laquan Jones (Newark, NJ/University) and Slater capped a 12-2 run which boosted the Raiders into a 32-25 lead with 6:44 left in the period. A layup by sophomore guard Chadd Barnes (Newark, NJ/University) pushed the Rutgers-Newark lead to 40-37, but the Rams never stopped the pursuit.
Ten players scored for the Rams in the second period, led by the freshman guard trio of Merlin Bass (Queens, NY/Holy Cross), Terrence Howard (Queens, NY/Cardozo) and Tremain Gary (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) as Farmingdale clawed its way back into the game with a 20-9 run over the final 2:55 of the game. Bass, who notched all of his points during the final run, knocked down a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to trim the Raider lead to 91-87.
Slater iced the game with a pair of free throws with one tenth of a second left.
Sophomore forward David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic) scored in double digits for the eighth time this season, collecting 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Singleton finished with nine rebounds for the Raiders who also got 15 points from Barnes. Senior guard Quran Wimberley (Newark, NJ/St. Anthony's) came off the bench for eight points, a game-high five assists and three steals.
Freshman guard Shane Denully (Bronx, NY/Our Saviour Lutheran) paced the Rams with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals while senior guard Terry Menefee (Mission, KS/Shawnee Mission North) added 10 points. Fourteen of the 15 players used by Farmingdale scored while 10 of the 12 Raiders to play registered in the scoring column.
Farmingdale State hosts New Jersey City on Saturday, December 16th at 3pm in a non-conference double-header with the women's team for their final game before the winter break. Rutgers-Newark hosts Hunter in a non-conference doubleheader in The Golden Dome on Saturday, December 30. The women tip off at 2 p.m. with the men to follow at 4 o'clock.
