BROOKLYN, NY — Casey wins cunyac rookie of the week;
Yellow Jacket WOMEN move to 5-4 with win

First freshmen TEMPESTT CASEY was named the CUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week (12/3-12/10) then the New York City College of Technology Women’s Basketball team went over the .500 mark (5-4) with a non-conference home victory over St. Joseph’s College (LI), 64-55. It marks the first time since the 2004-05 season that the Yellow Jackets sport a winning overall record.

Casey, a 6’0” center posted a pair of double-doubles, and averaged 13.7 points and 12.7 rebounds in City Tech’s 2-1 (1-1 CUNY) week. The Bronx native was a bright spot in the loss to Staten Island (12/5), recording 15 points and 16 boards. The freshman followed that up with eight points, four steals, and 10 rebounds in the win against CCNY (12/7). The Bronx Leadership graduate completed the week with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win versus New Rochelle (12/9). She’s averaging 13.7 points and 9.6 points per game this season.

Tonight, Casey had nine rebounds and two points in the first half, but sat out the second stanza with a minor knee injury. Junior MAREENA CREARY (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) led the way offensively for City Tech with 19 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore forward KEMI OWOSENI (Brooklyn Technical / Brooklyn, NY) had a double-double with ten points and a shared game-high ten rebounds. Sophomore guard DYSHEA SMILEY (Bronx Leadership / Bronx, NY) added nine points for the victors, who stormed out to an 11-2 lead early in the game and never looked back.

St. Joseph’s College (1-9) cut the lead to 47-44 with 7:46 remaining, but sophomore forward ANGELICA VEGA (Sheepshead Bay / Brooklyn, NY) hit a critical jumper to boost the margin back to five points. Vega and junior guard AMANDA ZIEMINSKI (Curtis / Staten Island, NY) each had seven points in the game for City Tech.

Freshman guard Carissa Pirotta (Northport East / Northport, NY) led the way for the Golden Eagles with 17 points and six assists, while junior forward Nicole Palazzo (Patchogue Medford / Patchogue, NY) scored 12 points for SJC.

The Yellow Jackets will wrap-up first semester action on Wednesday night, December 13th, as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) comes to the Klitgord Center for a 7:00 pm tip-off. St. Joseph’s will next travel to Purchase College on Tuesday, December 19th at 6:00 pm.
