Daytona Beach, Fla. — The Farmingdale State men's basketball team fell to Alice Lloyd in the first round of Carrabba's Shootout hosted by Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Alice Lloyd's Shawn Newsome scored 34 points on 7-for-11 shooting from beyond the three-point arc and was 9-for-10 from the charity stripe including 6-for-6 in the final 1:19 of the game to help the Eagles to the 73-63 victory.

William Dillard was on the end of most of Newsome's long-range bombs finishing with 10 assists and added 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field. Rodney Mitchell added 14 points and seven boards for the Eagles (7-6). Farmingdale State (6-3) was paced by Bobby Seible with 16 points, six boards and two blocks, while Rich Riss came off the bench to post 19 points with three rebounds and three assists.

The Rams trimmed the lead to three points at 57-54 with 4:46 to go after a Tom Canning layup. After ALC's Corey Hairston pushed the lead to 59-54 with a layup, Farmingdale State missed a three-pointer. Then Hairston who failed to capitalize on the bonus free throw on the previous possession, missed another pair of free throws, but this time be grabbed his own miss and was fouled once again. This time he sank both attempts giving the Eagles a 61-54 lead wth 3:31 to go. Then following a missed three-point attempt by Riss, Mitchell hit a jumper to build a comfortable nine-point cushion at 63-54 at the 3:02 mark.

Newsome, who nearly single-handidly put the Eagles in the driver's seat closed out the game with his deft touch converting all six free throw attempts down the stretch for the 10-point victory.

The Rams will now face Husson (Maine) tomorrow, January 6, in the consolation game at 6:00pm.
