UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Oshkosh 68-51at Kolf Fieldhouse in Oshkosh, Wisconsin Wednesday night to up the Warhawks' season record to 18-6 and set up a showdown for second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Kachel Gym in the Williams Center with UW-Eau Claire Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
Whitewater never trailed in the game, building a 46-23 lead by halftime behind 51% shooting from the field. UW-O actually outscored the Warhawks in the second half 28-22, but it wasn't enough to catch up. UW-W coach Keri Carollo was able to use her bench in the second half, with fifteen players seeing action, eleven of them breaking into the scoring column. Whitewater had a season low with eight turnovers, three less than the previous best set against Luther College November 25.
UW-W had three players in double figures. Junior guard Trisha Thill (Belgium/Ozaukee) had 15 points, sophomore center Tiffany Morton (Beloit/Memorial) scored 14, and junior center Lindsey Buechner (Cross Plains/Middleton) added 11. Buechner led the Warhawks with six steals, and Morton was the team's leading rebounder with eight.
Senior guard Becky Knapp (West Allis) led the Titans with 14 points, freshman forward Arin Lane (Stevens Point) had 12, and freshman forward Kayla Sharpee (Rio/Lakeside Lutheran) contributed 10. Lane led all rebounders with nine and Sharpee grabbed eight.
UW-W is 11-4 in the WIAC. UW-EC, a 78-52 winner over UW-Superior Wednesday evening, is also 11-4 in league play. The Blugolds are 17-7 overall. Saturday's winner will earn the second seed, and host the number seven seed, in the league's postseason tournament, which begins play Monday, Feb. 19. UW-W lost the first meeting this season with UW-EC, 62-51 Jan. 3 in Eau Claire. Game time Monday will be 7:00.
UW-Oshkosh is 8-14 overall and 4-11 in league play.
