WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ... Warhawks Defeat Oshkosh 68-59
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated UW-Oshkosh 68-59 Wednesday evening at the Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Whitewater led the entire first half, by as many as 14, but UW-Oshkosh cut the margin to 36-33 at intermission. Thirty-six seconds into the second half a three-pointer by Whitney Tyriver (jr, Oshkosh/West) tied the game at 36. The lead changed hands three times, but from 16:33 to 13:53 Oshkosh outscored the Warhawks 7-1 to take a 47-41 lead. Trisha Thill's (jr, Belgium/Ozaukee) put Whitewater back in front, 52-51, with two free throws at 8:03. Once again Oshkosh came back, using a layup by Kyla Sharpee (fr, Rio/Lakeside Lutheran) to regain the lead 57-56 at 4:30. After Whitewater took the lead, Oshkosh again went in front 59-58 at 3:08, which turned out to be their last lead. Whitewater outscored UW-O 9-0 the rest of the way, with Tiffany Morton (so, Beloit/Memorial) scoring five of the nine points.
Whitewater was led by Lindsey Buechner's (jr, Cross Plains/Middleton) 17 points, with Thill adding 10. Whitney Tyriver led UW-O with 20, followed by Becky Knapp (sr, West Allis/Hale) with 16 and Sharpee's 15.
Whitewater was 27-37 from the line and Oshkosh was 13-19. The 37 attempts for UW-W ties a season high also accomplished versus UW-Stout January 13.
UW-Whitewater, in the "others receiving votes" category of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III poll, upped its record to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Oshkosh, with its third straight loss, is 7-8 and 3-5.
UW-Whitewater's next game will be Wednesday, January 24 with UW-La Crosse visiting Kachel Gym for a 7:00 tipoff.
