GAMBIER, Ohio — The Allegheny College Gators (3-2, 0-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) dropped their NCAC opener against the Lords of Kenyon College (4-3, 1-0 NCAC), after a second half comeback attempt was thwarted by a game-winning bucket by Kenyon in the waning seconds, giving the hosts the 61-59 victory.

Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) scored a game-high 16 points, while Ben Torsney (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and George Raftis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. In all, 46 of the Gators’ 59 points came from their frontcourt, as leading scorer Casey McCloskey (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was held scoreless for the first time since the last game of his freshman year.

Allegheny started the game strong, jumping out to a 7-2 lead five minutes into the game, and trailed on just two occasions, both by one point. The Gators, however, could not pull away from the feisty Lords, and led by just one point, 24-23, at halftime.

Kenyon scored the first four points of the second half, opening a three-point lead before eventually increasing their advantage to 11, putting a finishing touch on a 16-3 run to start the second half. Allegheny’s deficit stayed in double figures and peaked at a dozen points with 10:42 to play before the Gators used a 10-0 run, capped by a pair of Bill Babe (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) free throws, putting the Blue and Gold within two with 7:34 to play in the contest.

The Gators never led the rest of the way, but trailed by just one with 3:43 to play when Babe hit the second of his two three-pointers on the game, and tied the game at 59 apiece with Hollihan’s final points of the game with 46 seconds to play. Kenyon’s David Jolson hit a jumper with eight seconds left, giving the Lords the 61-59 lead. A three-point attempt by McCloskey at the buzzer went awry, sealing the victory for the hosts.

Babe scored 10 of the backcourt’s 13 points, hitting 2-of-6 from long range and 3-of-9 overall from the field. Raftis pulled down seven rebounds to lead the tem, while Torsney and Hollihan had six and five, respectively. Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) dished out a team-best three assists while adding three points and two steals, while Hollihan and McCloskey each had two steals to tie for the team lead.

Kenyon put just one player in double figures for the game, but got scoring from nine of the ten players that saw action on the court. Korey Haddox scored 11 points for the Lords, while Jolson put in nine, including the game-winner. Dave Knapke pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds while adding eight points, with Josh Klinger dishing out a game-high four assists.

The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Wednesday, December 6 when the team travels to New Wilmington, Pa., to face off against the Titans of Westminster College. In their last game in the Westminster gymnasium, the Gators set school records for points and points by both teams in a 135-128 loss.
