Elmhurst 74, Millikin 65

MEADVILLE, Pa. — The Allegheny College Gators snapped a two-game losing skid in strong fashion on Wednesday night, hitting 14-of-32 three-pointers and scoring 93 points en route to a 93-68 victory over the Yeomen of Oberlin College. Senior Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) scored a career-high 21 points, including hitting 5-of-6 three-point attempts, and 8-of-10 shots overall from the field.

The Gators put two other players in double figures, while senior Casey McCloskey (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) became just the 22nd member of Allegheny’s 1,000-point club, as he put in a running lay-in with 56.6 seconds left on the first-half clock en route to nine for the game.

Allegheny (7-8, 3-4 North Coast Athletic Conference) drew first blood when Bill Babe (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) drained a three-point basket 19 seconds into the game, only to see the visitors counter when Quinton Spencer hit for three of his 13 points 15 seconds later. Four straight points by the Gators gave the hosts a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Allegheny pushed ahead to double figures six minutes into the first half, and kept their advantage for the remainder of the period, taking a 15-point, 47-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Gators kept the pressure on Oberin (3-13, 2-5 NCAC), pushing the lead to 20 seven minutes into the second stanza before cruising in for the 25-point victory.

Allegheny shot 54.3% from the field in the game (38-of-70), their second highest total of the season, while hitting 14-of-32 three-pointers. Savage’s 5-of-6 from long range was the third best single game percentage in school history, as seven different players hit a three-point shot in the victory. The team’s 26 assists was also a season-best, with the 14 three-pointers falling one shy of the 15 the team hit in a loss to Wooster on January 10.

14 of the 15 players that saw action reached the scoring column, as Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) scored 11 and Babe added 10. McCloskey scored nine overall, with Craig Devinney (Alison Park, Pa./Shaler) and Greg Richards (St. Albans, Vt./Shenendehowa) each scored a career-high eight points. Hollihan led the team with six rebounds, while Ben Torsney (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) snared six caroms in the win. Babe dished out a game-high five assists, as Savage picked up four steals.

Oberlin was led by Mike Loll and Dylan Venable, who each scored 14 points while Richardson adding 13. Loll pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for the double-double, as Jordan Beard added a team-high two assists to his eight points in the contest.

Allegheny travels to Springfield, Ohio on Saturday, where they will face off against the Tigers of Wittenberg University, with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m. in the HPER Gymnasium.
