ALMA, Mich. — Senior guard Jessica Babcock knocked down a pair of 3-point field goals to give Albion College slim leads late in the game, but Alma College was nearly perfect from the free throw line in the final minute as the Britons bowed to the Scots, 58-51, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball game Tuesday night.

Babcock’s first basket from behind the arc put Albion in front 48-47 with 2:24 remaining. Courtney Lusk provided Alma’s answer with a 3-point goal as the Scots regained the lead, 50-48, with two minutes remaining.

Babcock gave Albion its final lead of the evening when she knocked down a “three” with 1:46 on the clock. Lusk again produced the response for Alma, scoring a layup and a free throw. Emily Niemi, Ashley Matuzak, and Heather Keenan combined to go 5-of-6 at the line to seal the victory for the Scots.

Albion overcame a 33 percent shooting performance from the field and a 39-26 disadvantage in rebounds by forcing Alma into 21 turnovers.

Babcock led Albion with 11 points and three assists. Emi Guimond and Brittany Kemperman gave the Britons decent production off the bench with 10 and 9 points, respectively. Guimond connected on 3-of-5 shots from the field and on all four of her attempts from the free throw line.

Albion continues MIAA play on the road Thursday night with a contest against Calvin College.
