With the victory, Stevens assured itself of at least the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Skyline postseason tournament. The Ducks trail Mount Saint Mary College (18-3, 11-1) in the race for first place, but they will meet the Blue Knights in the regular-season finale on February 17 in Newburgh, N.Y. Stevens is also now just one win away from tying the school record for wins in a season. In 2001-02, the Ducks went 20-7. Stevens also won 20 of 29 games last year in its first season under head coach Jon Hochberg (Woodstock, N.Y.).
Junior forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo.) had 10 rebounds, nine points, four steals and two assists in the win over the Golden Eagles (2-21, 1-13). Junior guard Jean Matusiak (Queens, N.Y.) finished with nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Dani Dudek (Rockaway, N.J.) contributed nine rebounds, six assists and four points. Freshman guard/forward Sarah Gehring (Spokane, Wash.) chipped in with nine rebounds and six points.
St. Joseph’s was led by freshman guard Carissa Pirotta (East Northport, N.Y.), who had a game-high 18 points. She made four of five shots from downtown against the Ducks. Freshman forward Trish McMahon (North Patchogue, N.Y.) totaled nine points and seven rebounds in a losing effort.
Leading 15-13 midway through the first half, Stevens went on a 13-2 run over the final 9:39 of the period to grab a 28-15 lead at the break. Matusiak scored the first six points of the spurt for the Ducks. Enright contributed five points in the run.
Stevens led by as many as 18 points (41-23) with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game. St. Joseph’s scored 10 of the final 13 points over the last three minutes of the game to cut the Ducks’ lead down from 15 points to eight.
For the game, Stevens shot just 28.8 percent (21-for-73) from the floor. St. Joseph’s converted 14 of 38 field-goal attempts (36.8 percent) in the contest. The Ducks were able to pull out the victory by dominating the glass as they owned a 52-28 rebounding advantage.
Stevens will be off until February 14 when the Ducks hit the road to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7 p.m. in Kings Point, N.Y.
