Fitchburg State 69, Bridgewater State 64

HOBOKEN, N.J. — Junior guard Jean Matusiak (Queens, N.Y.) scored 10 of the first 17 points of the game for the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team as the Ducks rolled to a 66-39 victory over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday evening at the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. Matusiak finished with 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the floor as Stevens won for the eighth time in nine games.

Trailing 5-4 early on, Stevens used a 13-0 run over a three-minute stretch to take a 17-5 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Matusiak, who had seven steals and five rebounds in the game, scored seven points in the spurt for the Ducks. Leading 22-10 with less than six minutes to play in the half, Stevens scored 10 unanswered points to open a 22-point cushion (32-10). Junior forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo.) scored five points in the run. Freshman guard Lisa Iannotto (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added a big three-pointer.

Stevens (17-4, 10-2 Skyline), which has won three straight games overall, led 36-14 at the break. The Ducks extended their lead to as many as 34 points in the second half.

Enright tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds in the contest. Freshman forward Brittany Fuller (East Rockaway, N.Y.) added seven points and nine rebounds. Junior guard/forward Kelsea Wilks (El Sobrante, Calif.) had six points on 2-for-4 shooting from downtown. As a team, the Ducks made five three-pointers in the game – giving them 108 three-pointers on the season and breaking the school record of 107 three’s in 2001-02.

Old Westbury (10-9, 4-8 Skyline) was led by sophomore guard Leah Hernandez (Forest Hills, N.Y.), who finished with 15 points. She made three three-pointers for the Panthers, who suffered their fourth straight loss. Freshman guard Jazmin Bradley (Flushing, N.Y.) chipped in with 14 points and four rebounds.

Stevens shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the field in the game. The Ducks also limited Old Westbury to just 20.0 percent shooting (11-for-55) on the evening. Stevens owned a 52-30 rebounding advantage and forced 21 turnovers by the Panthers.

The Ducks will be back in action on Monday when they host the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m.
