Craig Devinney (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) also reached a career-best total, putting in 13 tallies, with Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) adding a dozen.
Allegheny (10-12, 6-8 North Coast Athletic Conference) scored the first five points of the game, before the visitors fought back, eventually taking a one-point, 9-8 lead with 16:03 to play in the opening period. A 12-2 run pushed Allegheny’s lead to nine, as the Blue and Gold never trailed again in the contest. Denison (4-18, 3-11 NCAC) was able to cut the deficit to one halfway through the period, but the Gators out-scored the Big Red by 10 over the rest of the half, pushing ahead to a 49-38 halftime lead.
The Gators scored the first eight points of the second half, opening the period on a 15-4 run, pushing ahead by 22 points four minutes into the period. Allegheny would not relinquish their double figure lead for the remainder of the game, as the teams emptied their benches over the final minutes of the 94-67 Allegheny win.
Ben Torsney (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) and Doug Price (E. Grand Rapids, Mich./E. Grand Rapids) each added seven points, while Ryan Hollihan (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) adding six off of the bench. Babe pulled down a team-best five rebounds, with Torsney grabbing four. Savage dished out six assists to lead the team, as Greg Richards (St. Albans, Vt./Shenendehowa) gave out five helpers in the win. Torsney blocked four shots for a game-high, while Babe picked up a pair of steals.
Denison was led by NCAC Player of the Year candidate Dan Hodgkinson, who scored 15 points in limited action due to foul troubles, with Brian Gognat chipping in 11. Gognat and Brian Elder each picked up seven rebounds off of the bench, with the Big Red out-rebounding Allegheny 40-29 for the game, including a margin of 22-7 on the offensive end.
With the win, the Gators move into a five-way tie for fourth place in the league, with a first-round NCAC Tournament home game at stake. The Blue and Gold look to improve their chances at the fourth seed as they travel to Hiram, Ohio to face off against the Terriers of Hiram College with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
