Knoxville 82, Transylvania 76

ALPINE, Tx. — Missed rebounds and free throws cost the Lobos as UTPB grabbed a 77-67 weekend victory over Sul Ross Saturday at the Gallego Center.

The Falcons tallied 42 team boards while holding Sul Ross to 26. Sully converted 10 of 20 foul shots while UTPB went 10 for 12, good for 83.3 percent from the free throw line.

The Lobos saw three players in double figures led by Larry Reese’s 17 points. Art Gonzalez and Anthony Mata supplied 14 and 13 points in the effort while Mata and Reese mustered 5 rebounds each.

UTPB sported two players with double double performances as Mansour Mbye tallied 21 points and 15 boards against the Lobos. Rashad Pride added 13 points and 10 rebounds with Anwar Morgan adding 17 points.

Sully shot 49.1 percent from the floor including a 6-16 outing from the beyond the arc.

The Lobos grabbed the lead early as Gonzalez nailed a 3-point shot 40 seconds into regulation. Sully put up a 5-0 run as Filiberto Torres added a short jump shot on the next offensive possession. Both teams patty-caked throughout the half with the Falcons taking a 35-31 halftime lead.

The Lobos opened the second half with a 3-pointer by sophomore Abe Ely to pull Sul Ross within one trailing 35-34. UTPB then went on a 9-1 run to take a 46-35 advantage with 16:06 left in the contest. The Falcons would go on to lead by as much as 16 the rest of the way while holding Sul Ross to 36 points in the second half to take the 77-67 final.

The Lobos drop to 0-2 and will head to Clarksville, Arkansas on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. nightcap against conference foe University of the Ozarks.
