The Lions (2-8) hit 9-of-14 free throw opportunities in the overtime period - Finlandia made the most of their many charity chances all afternoon, hitting 23-of-40 shots - to overcome a Stout seven point, 82-75, lead after the first minute of overtime and give the Blue Devils their second straight defeat.
After narrowly putting the game into overtime - Lindsey Gerber hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer in regulation - Stout (8-3) rolled out to the seven point lead. Julia Hirssig tossed in back-to-back buckets and Lindsey Geissler nailed a 3-pointer in the first 72 seconds of the extra period.
But Finlandia would parlay their free throw chances, in particular, Jodi Riutta, who dropped in five free throws and added the Lions' only points from the floor in the overtime to tie the game, 82-82, with three minutes on the clock. Two free throws by Jillian Dolkey were matched by Stout's Joanna Bird with a layup to tie the score for the 22nd time. Both teams missed scoring opportunities, but the Lions' Ally Tincknell drained two free throws with two second remaining for the win.
Finlandia held a 37-34 halftime lead, but Stout tied the game nine times in the second half and held the lead five times, but by never more than two points. Stout's biggest lead of the game was the seven point lead in overtime. Finlandia twice held as much as a five-point lead, once in the first half and once in the second half.
Stout was whistled for 30 personal fouls, while Finlandia drew 13 calls. The Lions dropped in 57.5 percent of their free throws, while Stout made 50 percent (9/18). Finlandia scored 63 of their points from the floor, while Stout, shooting 48.5 percent from floor, accounted for 75 points from field goals made. Stout had 28 turnovers in the contest, while Finlandia tallied only seven steals.
Finlandia's Riutta led all scorers with 22 points. Bridgette LaPointe added 21 for the home team. Kristina Nikkonen and Ticknell scored 10 points. Ticknell had 12 rebounds.
Kelsey Duoss, who fouled out late in the game, led Stout with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hirssig finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds and played with four fouls late in the game.
