Iowa Wesleyan 68, Rockford 65

WHITEWATER, Wis — The UW-Whitewater men's basketball team tied a team season high for three-point shooting percentage by hitting 67 percent from beyond the arc to help lead them past UW-Oshkosh 88-71 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Wednesday, February 14 in Whitewater. UW-W is now 16-8 overall and 9-6 in the WIAC while UW-Oshkosh is 19-5 overall and 11-4 in the WIAC.

UW-Oshkosh gained an early lead on a three pointer by Jim Capelle to go ahead 3-0. The Titans led by as many as four over the first nine minutes before the Warhawks took the lead for good. A layup by Jason Price (jr, G, Milwaukee/Washington) and back-to-back three-pointers by Andy Freund (sr, C, Wauwatosa/West) and Price helped the Warhawks build a 19-12 lead with 9:28 left in the first half. The Warhawks shot 54 percent from the field in the half and held the Titans to 36 percent shooting while holding a 37-23 lead at the end of the first half.

The Warhawks continued their hot shooting in the second half by shooting 67 percent from the field on 12-18 shooting. UW-Oshkosh was not able to get closer than 11 (45-34 at 14:06) in the second half while the Warhawks were able to build a 21 point lead, 63-42 at 6:42. The Warhawks made 24 of 30 free throws in the second half and scored ten of their last 12 points in the game at the free throw line. The Warhawks shot 59 percent for the game and forced 17 turnovers.

Price led all scorers with 26 points on 10-14 shooting and 5-7 beyond the three point arc. Giovanni Riley (sr, G, Milwaukee/Marshall) scored 15 and dished out five assists. Josh King (jr, F, Janesville/Craig) had 14 points and Freund chipped in 12. UW-Oshkosh was led by Capelle, who scored 19 points, while junior forward Jordan Johnson (Waupaca) and D.J. Marsh (fr, F, Bayside/Nicolet) each added 11.

The win puts UW-Whitewater in sole possession of fourth place, one game ahead of UW-Platteville, 8-7 in WIAC. The Pioneers fell to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday allowing the Pointers to clinch the WIAC regular season title. The top four teams in the WIAC regular season will host a first round playoff game in the WIAC Tournament Tuesday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m.

The Warhawks' next game will be at home in Kachel Gym of Williams Center against UW-Eau Claire in the WIAC regular season finale Saturday, February 17 at 3 p.m.
