UW-Whitewater shot 66% in the first half leading to a 56-24 lead at intermission, then cleared the bench on the way to a 98-56 win at Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin Saturday afternoon.
The 98 points is the second highest total UW-W has scored this season, following only the asterisk required for a game against Grinnell College. UW-W defeated Grinnella 126-90 December 16. Part of Whitewater's winning margin was built at the free throw line where the Warhawks went 21-25 while Superior was 10-19. Whitewater also enjoyed a 45-35 rebound advantage, and Whitewater committed 10 turnovers to 19 for UW-S.
UW-Whitewater did not have a player see more than twenty-one minutes of action. Fifteen players got in the game. All but five played double figure minutes, nobody played less than four minutes, and twelve players scored. Junior forward Josh King (Janesville/Craig), making his second start of the season, led Whitewater with 20 points, his collegiate high. King did not miss a shot in the game, going 9-9 from the floor and 2-2 from the line. King was the lone Warhawk to play 21 minutes. Junior guard Jason Price (Milwaukee/Washington) added 14 points, freshman center Dustin Mitchell (Lac du Flambeau/Lakeland) 11, and senior guard Craig Anderson (Mount Prospect, IL) 10.
Senior forward Leonard Cobb (Detroit, MI) led the Yellowjackets with 19 points, and was the game's leading rebounder with 9.
Whitewater also won the earlier meeting this season, 82-71 December 9 in Superior.
UW-W has won three in a row and four of its last five. Whitewater is 14-7 overall and 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-Superior is 6-15 overall and 1-11 in the WIAC. Whitewater remains tied with UW-Platteville, a 65-61 winner over UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon, for fourth place in the WIAC. The top four teams in the regular season will host a first round game in the league's postseason tournament, which begins Tuesday, February 20.
There are four games remaining in the WIAC regular season. UW-W has three of its last four at home, beginning with a Wednesday, February 7 matchup with UW-Stevens Point. That game will tip off in Kachel Gym at 7:00. Wednesday's game is also All-American Night for UW-W. The university will recognize twenty-six student athletes who earned All-American honors during the 2006 calendar year. For a list of athletes that will be honored go to http://www.uww.edu/athletics/news_events/2007_01_23_AllAmericanNight.html
