Whitewater built up a 40-27 halftime lead, and still had that margin at 42-29 with 18:26 in the second half. With Whitewater leading 44-36, Platteville outscored the Warhawks 18-0 over the next five-plus minutes, to take a 51-44 lead with 10:57 left. UW-W came back to regain the lead at 54-53 with 5:59 left on the second of two free throws by Mike Toellner (F, sr, Mayville). That would be Whitewater's final lead in the game, although UW-W trailed by just two at 63-61 with 35 seconds left and 65-63 with ten seconds left. Platteville's Curt Hanson (G, fr, Deerfield, IL) made the first of two free throws with ten seconds left to end the scoring. Whitewater missed a three-pointer with three seconds left that would have tied the game.
Platteville's Charlie Lohoff (G, so, Oshkosh/North) led all scorers with 21 points. Hanson and Mark Gossens (F, sr, Little Chute), with 15 points, were also in double figures. Rob Perry (F, jr, Milwaukee/Dominican) had 15 points for the Warhawks, hitting all six of his field goals, including a three-pointer, and he was 2-2 from the line. Senior center Andy Freund (Wauwatosa/West) added 11 points.
Whitewater shot 65% in the first half, but cooled off to 39% in the second half. Platteville out-rebounded UW-W 28-19. The Pioneers were 8-17 from beyond the arc.
UW-Whitewater, 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, had its four game win streak snapped. UW-Platteville, which had lost three straight games, is now 8-5 and 3-3.
UW-Whitewater will host UW-Stout Saturday, January 13 at at 3:00 in the Kachel Gym in Williams Center.
