UW-Whitewater opened up the game with a 12-2 run. River Falls rallied to keep the game close in the first half. The Warhawks led by six, 39-33 at the half. River Falls mounted a comeback and eventually took a two point lead with 0.4 seconds left in regulation. A technical foul on River Falls gave the Warhawks a chance to tie the game. Anthony Mlachnik sunk both free throws to tie that game at 71 apiece at the end of regulation. In overtime Whitewater outscored River Falls 20-15 to defeat the Falcons 91-86.
Mlachnik led the Warhawks in scoring with 22 points. Warhawks Rob Perry added 18 points and Jason Price chipped in 17 points. For the Falcons Nate Robertson and Courtney Davis led the team in scoring, both netting 19 points, while Ryan Thompson contributed 18 points.
UW-Whitewater shot 42.3% from the field for the game while the UW-River Falls shot 60.7%. River Falls committed 17 turnovers while Whitewater had only 7.
With the win UW-Whitewater improves to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC while UW-River Falls drops to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The Warhawks next game is Monday, January 8 at home against non-conference opponent Maranatha Baptist Bible College at 7:00 in the Kachel Gymnasium.
