MEN\'S BASKETBALL ... Eagles Edge Warhawks
Eighth-ranked UW-Whitewater fell to UW-La Crosse 57-53 Wednesday night in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Whitewater led 30-23 at the half, with a 30-21 score at 0:58 the largest margin of the game. La Crosse tied the game at 34-34 at 16:22, and that began a series of nine lead changes during the remainder of the game, with the largest lead by either team three points until the final score. With the game tied 53-53, UW-L\'s Chris Fehrenbach (jr, Waukesha/Memorial) hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left. After a Whitewater turnover and foul, UW-L\'s Brandon Brown missed the first of two attempts, Whitewater called timeout, Brown missed the second also but Bill Kegler (jr, Waterloo) grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Mike Toellner. Kegler made the second of two free throws to make it 56-53, and with nine seconds left UW-W missed a three point attempt to tie and Whitewater fouled on the rebound attempt to put Nick Fredrick at the line to score the final point.
La Crosse was led by Chris Ask (G, sr, St. Charles, MN) and Kegler with 11 points apiece. Whitewater was led by senior guard Giovanni Riley (Milwaukee/Marshall) with a game-high 12 points. Riley was one of four Warhawks with five rebounds. La Crosse had 12 turnovers to 21 for the Warhawks.
Whitewater, 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will play at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, December 6. La Crosse, 4-1 and 1-0, will be host UW-Eau Claire Saturday, December 2.
