Belton, Tx.; — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team led by double digits most of the way and then held off a late Sul Ross State rally and the Lady Cru posted a 70-60 victory over the Lady Lobos Thursday night in Belton. The UMHB women improve to 16-6 overall and 14-4 in American Southwest Conference play by winning their eighth straight game. The loss drops the Sul Ross State women to 5-16 overall and 3-15 in the ASC.
UMHB led by just one point at 19-18 with 8:26 remaining in the first half before the Lady Cru close the half with an 11-2 run to lead 30-20 at halftime. UMHB stretched the lead to 67-47 with 3:12 left in the game before the Lady Lobos used a late 13-3 run to cut the lead to ten. The Lady Cru shot 42 per cent from the field and only hit 2-14 from three-point range. UMHB blocked nine shots and out rebounded Sul Ross State 47-38. The Lady Lobos also shot just 20 per cent in the first half and 34 per cent from the floor in the game.
TaeLee Cisneros led UMHB and matched her career-high with 16 points. Shannon Barnes added a double-double for the Lady Cru with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Danielle Furr topped the Lady Lobos with 12 points and DeShonna Hill and Nitra Woods added 11 points apiece for SRSU.
The UMHB women will close out their regular season home schedule on Saturday against ASC West Division leader Howard Payne. The Lady Cru and Lady Jackets will tip off at 1:00 PM at the Mayborn Campus Center. The UMHB women will then close out the regular season with road games at McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University next week in Abilene.
