Belton, Tx.; — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team fell behind early and the Lady Cru could not fight their way in a 79-59 loss to 20th-ranked Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops the UMHB women to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the American Southwest Conference. Hardin-Simmons improves to 11-2 overall and 9-1 in the ASC with the victory.
The UMHB women fell behind 18-7 to open the game before battling back to get to within 18-11. The Cowgirls would not let the Lady Cru get any closer than that the rest of the way and HSU’s lead would not drop before double-digits the rest of the way. The Lady Cru shot just 34 per cent from the field and only hit 2-16 from three-point range. HSU shot 51 per cent from the field and hit 4-13 beyond the arc. The Cowgirls also out rebounded UMHB 39-34 in the game.
Shannon Barnes was the only player to reach double figures for UMHB with 13 points and she also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Jeni Hobbs led a balanced HSU attack with 16 points and Laci Walker added 15 points for the Cowgirls. Lysaa Dennard had 14 points and Melissa Contrucci had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards for HSU.
The UMHB women will now hit the road for a key ASC West Division showdown next week. The Lady Cru will take on Sul Ross State at 5:30 PM on Thursday in Alpine before facing Howard Payne for a 1:00 PM start on Saturday in Brownwood.
