UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Superior Saturday in Superior, Wisconsin, 82-71 to earn their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference Win of the season. UW-Whiewater is ranked 25th in the d3hoops.com week 2 poll.
UW-Superior lead the Warhawks by 11 points early in the first half until UW-W slowly began to work their way back into the game. The last time UW-Superior led by 11 points was with 10:34 left in the first on a jumper by the Yellowjackets Lamar Burton-Norman. After a 13-4 run by the Warhawks, UW-W was able to regain the lead with 4:58 left in the first half on a free throw by Andy Fruend (jr, Wauwatosa/East) to take the lead 33-32. UW-Superior was able to assemble a run of their own to take the lead at half 47-42. Early in the second half UW-W was able to regain the lead with 18:10 left in the game on a jumper by Mike Toellner (jr, Mayville) which made the score 50-49. from there the Warhawks never looked back and went on to win by 11 points.
Rob Perry (so, Milwaukee/Riverside) led the Warhawks with 24 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Fruend joined in with 11 points, five rebounds, and a team high five assists. Kori Vernon (so, Madison/Memorial), Toellner, and Billy Kolinske (jr, Milwaukee/Dominican) all scored 10 points as well in the win.
The Warhawks improved their record to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC. UW-Superior is now 1-7 and 0-4 in the WIAC.
The Warhawks' next game is Saturday, December 16 at Elmhurst, IL against Grinnell College at 2:00 PM. UW-W will be playing in the Elmhurst Bluejay Backer Classic. The winner of the UW-Whitewater/Grinnell game will face the winner of Kalamazoo/Elmhurst in the Championship game on Sunday at 4:00 PM. The consolation game is schedule for 2:00 PM. The Warhawks' next home game is Thursday, December 28 against Carroll College.
