Gardner-Webb 82, St. Mary's (Md.) 74

Indianola, Iowa — Dain Swetalla’s tip-in of a Drew Wessels miss with one second remaining lifted No. 15 Augustana, Ill. (4-1) to a 55-53 victory over Simpson (2-2) Dec. 2 in Indianola, Iowa. The Storm trailed by as much as 14 in the second half and were down 51-42 with 3:42 to go in the game before going on a 9-2 run that was capped off by a pair of Brett Cerak free throws that tied the game with eight seconds remaining. The Vikings called time out and set up a play for Wessels who drove coast-coast for a lay-up which was blocked by Jason Soppe. Swetalla grabbed his sixth offensive rebound of the night and put the ball back in for Augustana. Simpson called timeout, but the Storm’s last second effort failed, giving the Vikings the victory.

Swetalla posted a game high 18 points and a game high eight rebounds. He was the only Augustana player to score in double figures. Soppe was the only Simpson player to score in double figures as he had 10 points. Soppe broke the Storm school record for most blocks in a game with nine. The old mark was six, held by Ryan Hittenmiller and Carl Brack. Simpson’s 16 team blocks is also a new school mark, breaking the old record off 11 set against William Penn Jan. 27, 1998. Simpson and Augustana each turned the ball over 27 times. Both teams shot poorly from the field with the Vikings going 23-for-59 (39%) while the Storm went 17-for-46 (37%).
