In his final regular-season home game of his career, senior forward Matt Jacobson scored his 1,000th career point and the Centre College men's basketball team rolled to a 73-54 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) win over Sewanee-University of the South, Sunday, Feb. 18, in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels finished the regular season with a 20-4 overall mark and a 12-2 SCAC record tying them with DePauw University for the SCAC regular season championship. Centre also finished the season unbeaten at home at 12-0 and is now 15-0 in home contests dating back to the 2005-06 season. Sewanee falls to 6-17 overall and 5-8 in league play.
With all four seniors in the starting lineup for the first time this year, the Colonels ran off eight unanswered points to start the game and take an 8-0 lead. All eight points were scored by seniors, including Jacobson's opening three-pointer, which gave him his 1,000th point of his career.
Sewanee then scored seven straight points to cut the lead to one point (8-7) with 14:28 on the clock. The game remained close until the 7:38 mark in the first half, when Centre, ahead by three used another 8-0 run to extend its lead to 26-15 with 5:01 left in the half.
The Colonels continued to control the tempo, pushing the lead to as many as 18 points before going into the locker room with a 15 points (38-23) advantage.
The second half was all Centre, as the Colonels led by double figures the entire way. The lead grew to as many as 27 points before ending in a 19-point victory for the home team.
Jacobson finished the day with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. He is the second Centre player this year and the third player in the last two years to join the 1,000 point club. Junior guard Matt Nestheide scored his 1,000th career-point earlier this year and 2006 graduate, Reggie Magnusson, scored his 1,000 career-point last year.
Nestheide and junior guard Thomas Britt finished with 14 points apiece for the Colonels. With his 14 points, Nestheide moved into 21st place in school history in career-points with 1,049. The junior guard also posted six assists, four rebounds and a steal in the win. Freshman forward Danny Noll added 12 points and four assists of the bench for Centre.
Ben Purcell led Sewanee with a game-high 22 points. He also grabbed four rebounds in the defeat. Joey Garcia was the only other Tiger in double figures. Garcia finished with 10 points off the bench.
Centre will enter the SCAC Tournament, Friday, Feb. 23 in Memphis, Tenn. as the number two seed. The Colonels opponent will be determined once all conference games have been completed.
