The Gophers (6-10, 3-5 Capital Athletic Conference) appeared on their way to their 22nd win over St. Mary's in the 37-game all-time series between the two schools when they opened up a 73-61 lead midway through the second half on a lay-up by Ian Brown. But the Seahawks outscored head coach Leonard Trevino's squad, 25-6, over the final 10 minutes to come out on top, 86-80.
A lay-up by Tyson Lesesne with 6:05 left to play provided the Seahawks (9-7, 4-4 CAC) with a 76-75 advantage, but that was the first of five lead changes in a span of 3:14 before St. Mary's went ahead to stay on a lay-up by Calvin Wise with 2:51 showing on the clock.
Goucher cut a four-point deficit in half when Jones collected his final two points of the contest by scoring in the paint with :47 remaining, but Alex Irmer got those two points back when he finished off a feed from Lesesne with a slam dunk with :20 left to play.
Jones was 16-for-23 from the field and 6-of-8 at the free-throw stripe. He also supplied the Gophers with six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Last season, it was James Russo who torched the Seahawks for 38 points, tying the school record first established in 1992 by David Clark against Mary Washington. Tonight, Russo managed 18 points.
Lesesne captured scoring honors for St. Mary's by knocking down 26 points. Irmer and Mike Smelkinson added 19 and 16 points, respectively.
