The Gophers, who snapped a four-game losing streak to non-conference opponents in the Sports & Recreation Center, were trailing by 10 points when Joel Smith knocked down a three-point basket with 4:50 remaining before halftime. On Goucher\'s next possession, a conventional three-point play by Ian Brown reduced the Eagles\' lead to 24-20.
The Gophers finally caught the Eagles (4-2) at 24-24 when Brown converted two free throws with 3:08 left to play in the first half. Maryland Bible briefly regained a one-point lead on a free throw by Sam Platter, but Goucher went ahead to stay on a pair of made free throws by Pierre Jones on its next possession.
The Gophers turned a 10-point deficit into a 34-27 advantage at halftime by closing out the period on a 20-3 run.
Jones achieved a double-double in his first game for the Gophers since the 2003-04 season as he produced 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. James Russo contributed 15 points to the victory by landing five three-point baskets in the second half.
Goucher had two more double-digit scorers in Smith, who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds in his first collegiate contest, and Cameron Brown, who supplied the Gophers with 10 points.
Although he didn\'t score any points, freshman Brent Stanford dished out nine assists, making him one of only eight individuals in the history of Goucher\'s men\'s basketball program to hand out nine or more assists in a game.
The leading scorers for Maryland Bible were Tim Squire with 23 points and Platter with 21.
