ALPINE, Tx. — Anthony Miller’s buzzer-beating shot lifted the Sul Ross State University Lobos to a 67-65 ASC win over visiting Schreiner University in Saturday play at the Gallego Center.

Jermaine Packer finished with a team high 18 points in Saturday’s win while Art Gonzalez, senior Anthony Mata and Abe Ely supplied 14, 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Lobos hit 23 of 51 shots from the floor against the Mountaineers to finish at 45 percent including 5 of 12 from 3-point distance. Sul Ross made 16 of 23 foul shots good for 70 percent.

The Mountaineers held the lead for the first part of play before Sully assembled a 16-9 run to go ahead by 8, 32-24 with 6:23 left in the first half. Sul Ross spread the gap to 9, 37-28 after Ely converted a pair of free throws at the 3:24 mark. Schreiner then went on a 7-0 run which ended on a 3-pointer by Mountaineer Collyn Kelley with 2 seconds left until the break and Sul Ross leading 37-35.

The Lobos built the lead up to 8 points midway thought the second period. Schreiner knotted the game at 59 with 5:33 left in regulation. Schreiner took the reigns and held the advantage over the next 2 and a half minutes. Mata’s lay up tied the game at 63 with 1:40 left in the contest. The Mountaineer’s broke the tie off a Richard Moore lay up with just a minute left. The Lobos tied it up again at 65 as Jermaine Packer hit a jumper coming off the bench with 43 seconds to spare. A Schreiner turnover at the 22-second mark allowed Sul Ross to eat the clock until Miller, with 1 second left, fired a fade away giving Sully the 67-65 season ending final.

Sul Ross finishes with a season record of 8-16 and 8-13 in ASC competition.
