Notre Dame (Calif.) 83, Whittier 78

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Sophomore forward Josip Lucic-Jozak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led four Presidents in double figures with 19 points as Washington & Jefferson won for the fifth time in the last six games after topping Thiel, 82-74, in Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Henry Memorial Center.

Lucic-Jozak added six rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Presidents, who canned 34-of-43 free throw attempts.

After the Tomcats (5-10, 2-3) held an early advantage, the Presidents assumed a lead that it would not relinquish at the 17:55 mark following a jumper by sophomore forward Wahab Owolabi (Queens Village, N.Y./Randolph Macon Academy).

The Presidents stretched the lead to 34-24 at the 6:34 mark after a pair of free throws from senior guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum); however, Thiel narrowed the gap to 42-38 at halftime with a late 10-4 run.

The lead remained the same for the first 10 minutes of the second half until an 11-3 W&J spurt pushed the advantage to 68-55 with 5:59 remaining. Lucic-Jozak led the run with six points. Thiel was only able to close to within seven points (77-70) with 51 seconds remaining.

Lucic-Jozak made 4-of-5 shots from the field and 11-of-14 from the foul line. Koch added 18 points (10-of-12 free throws), while senior guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) dropped in 14 points. Owolabi rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points in 19 minutes of action. The Presidents (6-11, 3-2) shot 47 percent (23-of-49) from the field.

Sophomore guard Brandon Mirizio (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Junior forward Joe Herrmann (Hartstown, Pa./Jamestown) chipped in with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Tomcats made 54 percent (26-of-48) of their attempts and held a 30-25 edge on the glass.

The Presidents round out the first half of their PAC schedule on Wednesday when traveling to Grove City for a 7:30 pm contest.
