Sophomore forward Paul Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) contributed 15 points, junior center Tom Bicknell (Melbourne, Australia/St. Bede’s Colelge) added 14 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Ryan FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) chipped in 11 points as the Royals shot nearly 52 percent from the field to win their second straight game to improve to 18-5 overall and remain one-game behind league leader King’s College in the Freedom Conference with a 9-3 mark. The victory was also career win number 100 for sixth-year head coach Carl Danzig.
Sophomore guard Jason Seipt (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) came off the bench to knock down all five of his 3-point field goal attempts to lead the Aggies with 15 points. Senior guard Isaiah Pickney (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) added 12 points for Delaware Valley, which fell to 5-18 overall and 3-9 in the Freedom Conference.
Arnold and Hawk combined for 22 first-half points as the Royals set the stage by connecting on 17 of 32 field goal attempts (53.1 percent) to open up a 48-28 lead by intermission. Leading 15-12 with 13:47 remaining, Biagioli sparked a 24-7 rally with a 3-pointer and Arnold scored six points during a 10-minute span as Scranton built up the first of three 20-point leads, 39-19, with 3:32 left. Scranton’s largest lead in the first-half was 23 points. Pickney scored 10 points in the first-half for the Aggies, who shot nearly 42 percent from the field but were guilty of 11 turnovers.
FitzPatrick opened the second-half with a 3-pointer and added another during an 18-4 spurt as Scranton extended its lead to 34, 66-32, with 13:06 left. The closest the Aggies would get the rest of the way was 27 points on two occasions.
For the game, Scranton shot 51.5 percent from the field and 93.8 percent from the free throw line (15 of 16). The Royals also out-rebounded the Aggies, 42-22. Arnold’s seven steals gives him 196 for his career, which is one behind Drew Morano (197 steals, 1988-1992) on the University of Scranton all-time list.
Prior to the game, senior guard Darren Cannon (Paupack, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) received the John ‘Les’ Dickman Award, which is presented annually to the Royals’ most valuable player. He made his third start of the season and finished with seven points, two rebounds, three assists and a steal in 19 minutes of action. The Dickman Award has been presented at Scranton since 1954.
The Royals will close out their Freedom Conference schedule on the road this week with games at Lycoming on Tuesday, February 13, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and next Saturday, February 17, against DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.
