Rose-Hulman 63, Franklin 62

La Crosse, Wis. — The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team earned its second three-point win over UW-La Crosse this season with a 68-65 victory Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Pointers improve to 17-3 overall and 11-1 in the WIAC while the Eagles fall to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in the conference. UW-L entered the game ranked 22nd on D3hoops.com and suffered its first home loss of the season (8-1).

The Pointers earned a 67-64 win over the Eagles December 9 in Stevens Point.

The Eagles led 4-2 early in the game when the Pointers went on a 8-0 run to lead 10-4 with 16:28 remaining in the opening half. UW-Stevens Point led by as many as seven at 21-14 with 10:14 left when UW-L took its final lead of the game at 23-21 after a 9-0 run. With the game tied 25-25 with 5:51 left in the first half, UW-Stevens Point went on a 10-1 run and later led 37-32 at halftime.

UW-Stevens Point led by as many as 13 in the second half, including 59-46 with 9:08 left. UW-L trailed 64-54 with 5:44 remaining when it went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 66-63 with 2:08 left. Jon Krull hit a pair of free throws for the Pointers with 1:15 left to make it 68-63 before Joe Werner hit two-of-two free throw attempts for UW-L to make it 68-65 with :49 remaining. The Eagles had a chance to tie the contest with :11 remaining, but turned the ball over with :01 left.

Pete Rortvedt led four UW-Stevens Point starters in double figures with 18 points, hitting four-of-eight three-point attempts. Krull added 16 points while Steve Hicklin finished with 14 and Khalifa El-Amin 12. El-Amin also finished with six assists. Bryan Beamish had a team-high nine rebounds.

UW-Stevens Point shot 46.4% from the field, including 37.9% (11-of-29) from three-point range. The Pointers shot 55.0% (11-of-20) from the field in the second half. The team finished five-of-seven (71.4%) at the line.

Werner led UW-L with 26 points, finishing seven-of-11 from the field and 12-of-15 at the line. Werner added nine rebounds, three steals, three assists and two blocks. Chris Ask recorded his second double-double of his career with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ask also had three steals and two blocks.

UW-L shot 42.6% from the field, including 14.3% (one-of-seven) from three-point range. The Eagles were 24-of-30 (80.0%) at the line.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, February 7 hosting UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
