FARMINGTON, ME — Andrew Hippert scored 16 points and Kevin Bradley and Jordan Fliegal added 12 apiece to lead Bowdoin (7-3) to a 61-57 win over UMF (4-6) this afternoon in non-conference men’s basketball action at Dearborn Gymnasium. The Polar Bears built a 39-28 halftime lead and held off UMF in the second half for the victory. Josh Tanguay led the Beavers with 12 points and 11 points.

Bowdoin jumped out to a 22-5 lead at the 10:00 mark of the first half, as UMF mustered just two baskets in the opening 10 minutes of play. The Beavers, however, responded with a 15-3 run of their own over the next three-plus minutes of play and closed the gap to five, 25-20, following a three-pointer from Matt St. John (Wayne, ME). UMF pulled within five on two additional occasions during the opening half, but trailed by 11, 39-28, at the half as neither team scored over the final 2:03.

With Bowdoin leading 41-29 in the opening minutes of the second half, UMF began to slowly chip away, using a Tanguay layup to cut the lead to nine, 42-33, and a three-pointer from Eric Lelansky at the 13:44 mark to pull within six, 44-38. A pair of free throws from Pat Howell forged a 46-46 tie with 11:38 to go, while a three-pointer and layup by Ted Neil on back-to-back possessions gave the Beavers a 57-56 lead with 1:43 to play. Bowdoin, however, scored the final five points of the game, using a pair of free throws from Kyle Jackson and three from Kevin Bradley to win the game.
