Wilkes-Barre, PA — The University of Scranton used an 18-0 lead to end the half and gain some breathing room on their way to an 82-33 Freedom Conference women’s basketball win over Wilkes University on Wednesday night in the Marts Center.

The win improves the Lady Royals, who are ranked seventh in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, to 20-2 overall and 11-0 in the conference. Wilkes sees their overall record slide to 6-16 and their conference record move to 2-9.

Wilkes hung tough in the opening eight minutes of the opening stanza and cut the lead to 13-8 on a lay-up by Nicole Quick at the 12:12 mark. Scranton would respond with field goals by Michelle Fabio, Ryan Mooney and Tiffaney Williams to extend their lead to 19-8 with 10:56 left in the period.

Lacey Andresen would cash in a three-pointer for the Lady Colonels and Williams converted a traditional three-point play for Scranton to move the score to 22-11. Kelly Patchell followed for Wilkes with a bucket inside to cut the deficit to 22-13 with 9:06 left in the half.

The field goal by Patchell would be the final points of the half for the Lady Colonels as Scranton closed the half on an 18-0 spurt to take command for good. Williams hit a free throw, Allison Matt knocked down a jumper and Taryn Mellody dropped in a three-pointer to give the Lady Royals a 28-13 lead. A Williams lay-up and a four-point play by Mellody would extend the gap to 34-13 with 3:43 showing on the clock.

Marisa Healy came off the bench to hit a field goal inside and pair of charity tosses to make it a 38-13 lead. Tammy Waiters would end the half with two free throws with no time showing on the clock to give Scranton a 40-13 lead at intermission.

Wilkes would never threaten in the final 20 minutes as Scranton continued to add to their lead by shooting a red-hot 51.5 percent from the field and holding Wilkes to just 24 percent shooting.

Mellody paced the Scranton attack by popping in 15 points. Casey Thran contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Williams ended the night with 10 points. Matt was credited with six assists.

Randi Corbo had 10 points to lead Wilkes offensively. Patchell chipped in with six points and a game-high eight rebounds.
