SCRANTON, Pa.—Junior guard Stephanie Remington (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first-half to spark The University of Scranton to a 38-22 halftime lead en route to a 71-51 victory over Catholic University Saturday afternoon at the Long Center.
The Lady Royals, now 2-1, also received 10 points from junior guard Taryn Mellody (Dunmore, Pa./Bishop O’Hara), nine points and five rebounds from senior forward Tammy Waiters (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and eight points apiece from junior forward Michelle Fabio (Brick, N.J./Saint Rose) and junior guards Julie Brophy (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and Allison Matt (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic).
Catholic University, which fell to 2-2, was led by senior guard Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) with 12 points and freshman forward Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) added nine points, eight rebounds and four steals.
After coming off the bench to score 10 and 16 points against Montclair St. and Rochester, respectively, to open the season last weekend, Remington continued her shot-in-the-arm tactics by coming into the game early in the first-half and scoring seven straight points to give Scranton a 14-7 lead. She also drilled a 3-pointer at the 5:27 mark as the Lady Royals extended the lead to 12, 28-16. The Cardinals got off to a slow start by connecting on only 8 of 29 field goal attempts (27.6 percent) in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Mellody took over for Scranton early in the second-half by drilling a 3-pointer and following it up with a lay-up as the Lady Royals extended the lead to 21, 43-22, with 18:17 remaining. The closest the Cardinals got the rest of the way was 17 points on two occasions.
Scranton, which avenged a 64-56 loss to the Cardinals last year at the DuFour Center in Washington, DC, held a 47-39 advantage in rebounding and pressured Catholic into 25 turnovers. The Cardinals picked up their shooting in the second-half by connecting of 10 of 24 attempts (41.7 percent) to finish 34.0 percent for the game.
The Lady Royals have now won 49 consecutive games at the Long Center and haven’t lost since a 73-71 defeat in overtime to DeSales University on February 15, 2003. Scranton will open defense of its Freedom Conference title this Wednesday, November 29, against the Lady Monarchs of King’s College at the Scandlon Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
