SCRANTON, Pa. — 4TH-RANKED LADY ROYALS HOLD OFF MORAVIAN, 64-57, FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT VICTORY WEDNESDAY AT THE LONG CENTER; MELLODY TOSSES IN SEASON-HIGH 19 AS SCRANTON IMPROVES TO 5-1

Senior guard Taryn Mellody (Dunmore, Pa./Bishop O’Hara) connected on 9 of 12 shots from the field en route to a season-high 19 points as The University of Scranton held off a second-half rally to defeat Moravian College, 64-57, Wednesday evening at the John J. Long, S.J., Center.

Junior guard Stephanie Reminington (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua), making the first start of her career, added 12 points as the Lady Royals, ranked 4th by D3hoops.com and 5th by ESPN/WBCA/USA Today, won their fourth straight game to improve to 5-1. Moravian College, now 5-3, was led by freshman forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) with 15 points and senior forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Rutgers Preparatory-NJ) added 10 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds.

Moravian dug itself a big hole early by making just two of their first 21 shots from the field (.095) to fall behind 30-9 with 4:03 left in the first-half. Lady Greyhound freshman guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 14-2 rally that cut Scranton’s lead to 32-23 at intermission. Mellody hit all six of her shot attempts in the first-half to lead the Lady Royals with 12 points and senior center Tiffaney Williams (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) had six points, four rebounds and four blocked shots in the opening 20 minutes of play.

The Lady Greyhounds continued to chip away at the Scranton lead and eventually cut it to four, 37-33, with 16:04 left. The Lady Royals regrouped, in part behind two steals by freshman guard Ryan Mooney (Spring City, Pa./Pius X), and senior forward Tammy Waiters (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and Mellody combined for eight points during a 13-4 spurt during an 8-minute span to take a 50-38 lead with 7:32 remaining

Scranton maintained a double-digit lead until Lady Greyhound senior guard Katie Rizman (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) scored on a lay-up with 57 seconds remaining to cut the margin to eight, 60-52. Remington knocked down three free throws on Scranton’s next two possessions to push the lead back up to 11, before Moravian’s Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) drained a pair of free throws to make it a 3-possession game, 63-54, with 28 seconds remaining.

After the Lady Royals’ missed two free throws with 21 seconds remaining, Stearns drilled a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to cut the gap to six, 63-57. Scranton’s Julie Brophy (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) made one of two free throws with five seconds left to set the final score.

Neither team got untracked offensively. After shooting 21.9 percent in the first-half (7 of 32), the Lady Greyhounds connected on only 11 of 38 (28.9 percent) to finish 18 of 70 for the game (25.7 percent). Scranton shot a reasonable 43.8 percent from the field in the first-half, but made only 8 of 25 field goal attempts (32.0 percent) in the second-half to finish 38.6 percent for the game. Both teams were also guilty of 22 turnovers apiece.

Williams finished with eight points, seven rebounds and seven blocks for Scranton, which will take on Baruch College this Saturday, December 9, in New York City beginning at 4:30 p.m. Mellody has now topped her season-high in points in each of her last three games.
