The Pointers were in rhythm from start to finish and posted their biggest margin of victory in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game since a 98-36 win over UW-Superior on Jan. 22, 1983.
The Pointers held the Yellowjackets without a field goal over a span of 6:34 in the first half during a 20-1 run as they led 41-14 with 4:20 remaining in the half. Pete Rortvedt scored 15 of his 17 points during the half as UW-Stevens Point had just two turnovers, including none in the first 13 minutes of the game.
After leading 48-21 at halftime, UW-Stevens Point opened the second half red hot by connecting on seven of its first eight shots during a 17-4 run to take a 65-25 lead with 16 minutes left in the game. The Pointers’ reserves also played solid down the stretch as UW-Stevens Point scored 53 second-half points, shooting 65.5 percent in the second half and committing just seven turnovers for the game.
Steve Hicklin led the team with 19 points on seven-for-10 shooting from the field. Kevin Grusczynski added 12 points and Drew Jackson and Jon Krull each had 10 points. The Pointers held a 39-23 rebounding advantage over the Yellowjackets, who got 11 points from James Nobles.
UW-Stevens Point is now 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Yellowjackets, who had won their previous two games, fell to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the WIAC.
