Rochester, NY; — Senior guard Allison Matt (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) had 17 points while Tiffaney Williams (Scranton, PA/Scranton) added 12 and 10 rebounds as top-ranked Scranton pulled away in the second half from Montclair State for a 75-62 victory in the opening game of the Resler Tournament held at the University of Rochester on Friday evening. Taryn Mellody (Dunmore, PA/Bishop O\'Hara) had 12 points and four steals as Scranton moved into the championship game of the tournament where they will face host Rochester on Saturday at 6:00 pm. Rochester defeated Clarkson, 82-54 in the other opening-round contest.
Senior forward Stephanie Machin (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds as Montclair State as the Red Hawks (0-1) fell to 1-3 all-time against the Royals as the team met for the first time since the 1994-95 campaign. Scranton won that contest, 84-62. Sophomore Amy Bonk (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) added 13 points off the bench for the Red Hawks (0-1), who will face Clarkson in the consolation game on Saturday,at 3:00 pm.
Scranton jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the first half, but the Red Hawks kept the game close and took a 17-13 lead with 10:50 to play as Ferin Catlett (Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) scored on a layup to give Montclair a 17-13 lead. The Royals would come back to tie the game at 19-19 before Marianne McGovern\'s (Fair Lawn, NJ/Paramus Catholic) layup game the Red Hawks a two-point lead with 6:24 to play.
Scranton responded with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to build a 31-21 advantage. A jumper by Bonk with 44 seconds left trimmed the lead to 33-29 before halftime, however Stephanie Remington (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) closed out the half with three free throws as Scranton led 36-29 at the break.
In the second half, Remington\'s layup with 17 minutes left gave the Royals their largest lead of the game at 45-31. Montclair chopped away at the deficit and tied the game at 49-49 with 12:09 to go as Bonk put in a layup off an assist from Jessica Garrabrant (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls).
After the Royals restored the lead to six, Garrabrant, who finished with eight points and a game-high 17 rebounds, scored to bring MSU within 59-55 with 7:31 left. Scranton would closed out the game with a 16-7 run led by Matt, who had six points.
Remington finished with 10 points for Scranton.
McGovern finished with eight points as did Catlett. Junior guard Jessica Horan (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) had six points for the Red Hawks.
