The Colonels, which won nine games in a row in 2004, improve to 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Trinity falls to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Rhodes College holds the largest winning streak during the SCAC era, winning 20 straight games during the 1991-92 season.
With Centre ahead 13-9 and just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, the Colonels closed the half on a 20-10 run to take a 33-19 lead at the break. Six different players scored during that run to give Centre the halftime advantage.
Trailing 35-21 early in the second half, Trinity began to chip away. The Tigers used a 17-6 run to pull within three points at 41-38 with 12:55 to play. The Colonels scored the next eight points and pushed the lead back to 11 points (49-38) at the 11:01 mark.
Once again, Trinity made a run, outscoring Centre 11-2 to cut the lead to 51-49 with just over four minutes left. The Tigers would get no closer as the Colonels scored 10 of the final 13 points to finish with the nine-point win.
The game also marked the 10th time this season Centre has limited an opponent to less than 40.0% shooting. Trinity shot only 39.5% (17-43) for the game compared to the Colonels' 43.5% (20-46). Centre also controlled the boards out rebounding the Tigers 34-21, including an 11-3 edge on the offensive end.
Nestheide finished five of 14 from the field, including four of nine from beyond the three-point arc and six of six from the charity stripe, for his game-high 20 points. The junior guard also grabbed seven rebounds. Jacobson was five of six from the floor, hitting two of his three three-point attempts and three of his five free throw attempts for 15 points off the bench.
Charles Houston led three Tigers in double figures with 15 points and seven rebounds. Brandon York added 13 points and Nick Polidoroff posted 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Centre will next travel to Jackson, Miss. to play Millsaps College, Friday, Jan. 26. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 8 p.m. CST.
