Virginia Wesleyan led 49-37 with 11:24 remaining to be played when the Marlins began their pull-away in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. Senior Rodney Young started it with a jumper, sophomore Terrell Dixon followed with a triple and the VWC defense kicked in to cause some problems for the Generals (3-3, 0-2).
In a little more than six minutes, the Marlins helped force six Washington and Lee turnovers that only added to a cold shooting streak by the Generals, who hit on only one of seven field goal attempts in the same span. While the Generals put up two points, the Marlins tacked 19 on to their lead, led by Young with nine points and Dixon with five to help open up a 68-39 lead with 4:50 on the clock.
Young, a player off the bench for the Marlins (4-1, 2-0), finished with 19 points, tying a career-high total tallied against the Apprentice School in 2005. He connected on 7-of-9 field goal attempts, including 2-of-4 triples, hit 3-of-5 free throw attempts, pulled down six rebounds, dished out an assist and produced two blocks.
Virginia Wesleyan's depth stood out in the game, as Young was one of numerous players off the bench who combined to outscore Washington and Lee's bench players 42-19. Junior D'Juan Tucker added to VWC's showing with nine points and sophomore Ari' Paschal and rookie Stephen Fields tallied five points each.
The Marlins also helped themselves with a dominant showing on the backboards, out-rebounding the Generals 43-17. Senior All-American Brandon Adair led the way with seven and junior Tyler Fantin and Young finished with six each.
Washington and Lee started off well in the game, following the lead of Greg Bienemann and Femi Kusimo. The Generals led most of the first half, twice opening up seven-point margins on scores from Kirk Jones and Bienemann, but could not hold off the Marlins. Adair knocked down a jumper, Young blocked a shot and Fields scored on a layup to ignite a 20-2 Marlin run in the final 9:13 of the half. It was a 20-0 run before Bienemann scored in the final minute for the Generals, who trailed 35-24 at halftime.
Bienemann led Washington and Lee scoring with 19 points, hitting 9-of-15 field goal attempts. He was the only General in double figures.
