Thie fouled Tim Dunlavy on the ensuing inbounds. The freshman from Bettendorf made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give Simpson an 80-75 with 42 seconds to go. Travis fouled Todd Lorensen on the Vikings’ next trip up the court. Lorensen missed his first free throw attempt, but his second, which was good, was waved off due to a lane violation. Hoberg was called for an intentional foul (of Travis) as the Storm tried to inbound the ball. Travis made of the free throw attempts for a 82-75 Simpson lead. Simpson got the ball back underneath the Vikings’ basket where Ryan Hittenmiller was fouled by Spielman. Hittenmiller connected on both of his free throws to push the Storm lead to 84-75. With 24 seconds left, Grand View’s Jason Jay made a three-pointer next time down for the Vikings. Lorensen quickly fouled Adam Thorson who was good on his first free throw attempt, but missed the second. The Vikings drove the ball to the lane where Spielman was fouled by Hittenmiller. Spielman made both of his attempts to make 85-80. Thorson inbounded to Dunleavy who made a long pass to Jason Parkinson for an easy layup to make it the final 87-80.
The teams combined for 54 personal fouls and 71 free throw attempts. Grand View was 24-of-38 from the charity stripe (63.2%) while Simpson went 22-of-33 from the line (66.7%). Simpson shot 54% (27-of-50) for the game. Hittenmiller led all scorers with 29 points, tying his career high. The 6-3 forward added five rebounds and two assists. Parkinson, the reigning Iowa Conference Player of the Week, scored 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting which included five three’s. Jason Soppe was 7-of-8 from the field to score 14 points before fouling out. Grand View was led by Hoberg and Spielman who each scored 14. Spielman was 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Lorensen had 13 while Jim Strand scored 12 (5-of-5 shooting).
