ST. PETER, Minn. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (2-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) defeated No. 40 Gustavus Adolphus College (1-2), 63-58, on Sunday, Nov. 26 at the Lund Center in St. Peter, Minn. After falling behind by as much as 15 points, 27-12, in the first half, Carthage used a 15-2 run to pull to within two points, 29-27, at halftime. In the second half, with the score tied at 56-56 and 1:17 remaining, the Red Men’s Brian Schlemm connected on the front end of two-shot free throw to put Carthage up for good, 57-56. Schlemm hit a jumper with 35 seconds to go to put the Red Men up by three, 59-56. The Gusties’ Andrew Doble made it one-point game, 59-58, with a basket at the 18-second mark before Carthage’s Joe Higgins drained a pair of free throws with 13 seconds on the clock to put the Red Men back up by three, 61-58. Carthage’s Trey Bowens converted a steal into a layup as the clock ran out to give the Red Men their final, 63-58 margin. Carthage shot 49 percent (23-47), while Gustavus Adolphus shot 50 percent (24-48). Brian Schlemm led the Red Men with 15 points on five-of-10 field goals and four-of-eight from the free-throw line. Bill Shemerdiak had 12 points, and Neb Franciskovic chipped in 10 points. Andrew Doble led the Gusties with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Carthage travels to Wauksha, Wis., on Tuesday, Nov. 28 to play No. 17 Carroll College (Wis., 1-3) in a 7 p.m. game at the Ted Baker Court at Van Male Fieldhouse.
