ST. PAUL, Minn. — Andrew Doble came off the bench to lead four Gustavus players in double figures as the Gusties toppled Macalester 79-70 Saturday in St. Paul. Gustavus shot 75% in the second half and finished with a 63% figure on the day. Gustavus was 29-for-46 from the floor, including 15-for-20 in the second half.

Gustavus Adolphus remains in third place in the MIAC, improving to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in the league. Macalester drops to 7-9 on the season, 4-7 in MIAC play.

Doble, who was 9-for-11 from the field, was joined in double figures by Trevor Wittwer with 20 points, Kane Sivesind with 16 and Phil Sowden with 15. The four GA players in double figures combined to go 26-for-36 from the floor (72%).

Tom Conboy finished with 22 points to pace Macalester, while Brad Liddell added 17 with the help of five three-pointers. Jesse Hollander had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. MIAC assist leader Abe Woldeslassie dished out six helpers and Andy Stein came off the bench to provide eight points.

Gustavus out-scored the hosts 40-26 in points in the paint and 37-18 in bench scoring.

Macalester led for much of the first half and was on top 24-16 at the 7:42 mark before the visitors closed out the period on a decisive 22-6 run from that point forward to take a 38-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. Mac cut the lead to three points at 50-47 at 12:27 with a 10-2 run but could get no closer as Gustavus then went on a 13-5 rally to get the margin back up to 11 points at 7:08 to play. The lead was never in jeopardy after that.

Macalester has a bye Monday and returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 24) against St. Mary’s. The Golden Gusties play Monday (Jan. 22) at Augsburg.
