St. BONIFACIUS, Mn — Cougars overcome slow start for UMAC men’s road win

For Immediate Release: January 26, 2007 Minnesota-Morris outscored Crown College 39-28 in the second half and turned a three point, 33-30 halftime lead into a 72-58 road win in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) men’s college basketball action Friday night.

The Cougars grabbed a quick 6-0 lead to start the game on a basket by Chris Conley and four Eric Dalbey free-throws, just under three minutes into the ball game.

After the Storm tied the game at 8-8 at 14:30 in the opening half, Brent Durensky got UMM stared on a 9-0 run over the next 2:17 as the Cougars took a 17-8 lead.

Crown College then put together a 14-2 spurt to open a three point lead at 22-19 with 5:50 remaining in the first half.

Trailing 24-22, Brendan McNally got started a 9-0 run by the Cougars that saw UMM open a 31-24 lead with 1:51 to play in the first half after a Hudson Brothen basket and Minnesota-Morris led 33-30 at halftime.

The Cougars were 12-of-26 (46 %) from the floor in the half, Crown was 12-of-31 (38.7 %) in the first 20 minutes.

Brent Durensky drained a three for the Cougars to start the scoring in the second half that gave UMM a quick 36-30 lead.

Brendan McNally then started and finished a 12-0 scoring run by the Cougars with a pair of lay-ups, that saw the Cougar lead go from two at 38-26 to 14 at 50-36 over the next four minutes of the game and the pulled away for the win.

In the second half, the Cougars committed just five turnovers and shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the field in the second half, while holding the Storm to 38.7 percent (12-of-31) shooting.

Bench scoring was a big key in the win as the Cougar bench outscored the Storm 35-18. Minnesota-Morris also had a season low 11 turnovers in the game.

Brendan McNally led the way for the Cougars with 14, Steve Farmer added as 11 different players scored.

The win was also the first on the road this season for the Cougars.

Minnesota-Morris (4-12, 2-4 UMAC) takes on league leading Northwestern College, today, Saturday, January 27 at 5:00 in St. Paul. The Eagles enter the game with a perfect 6-0 league record.
