Mississippi College 78, Stillman 62

St. Paul, Minn. — With an 81-57 win over Crown College (Minn.) Tuesday night, the Northwestern College (Minn.) men’s basketball team was crowned champions of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). This is Northwestern’s fourth straight UMAC championship, and sixth regular season title in the past seven seasons. Northwestern improves to 20-5 overall on the year, the second season in a row to surpass the 20-win plateau. The Eagles finished regular season UMAC action with a 12-2 record.

Crown College (3-22, 0-14 UMAC) came out strong in the first half and Northwestern found themselves trailing 24-16 midway through the first period. The Eagles then mounted a 7-0 run to take a 25-24 lead before Crown answered and the score was tied at 27-27 with three minutes remaining in the first half. Trading basket-for-basket, Northwestern eventually went into the locker room with a 33-30 advantage. Eagle junior Mike Anderstrom (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) recorded 12 points and 6 rebounds at the break.

Northwestern kept up their pace in the second half and found themselves ahead by ten 52-42 with 12 minutes remaining. Crown pulled within nine three minutes later, but a 6-0 run over the next three minutes secured the Eagles lead at 66-49 and the Storm did not come any closer. With the 81-57 win, Northwestern College is 53-4 all-time versus Crown College.

Four Eagles ended the game in double figures, highlighted by Anderstrom’s double-double performance of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Steve Discher (Andover, Minn.) added 18 points and 5 rebounds while Daniel Hanson (Plymouth, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) contributed his 11th double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Dave Zuleger (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) added 10 points and 4 assists. Mitch Jones (McCloud, Calif.) led the storm with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwestern College is set to host the UMAC Conference Tournament this Friday and Saturday, February 23 and 24. Northwestern is the No. 1 seed and will host No. 4 Martin Luther College at 7:30 p.m. at the Erickson Center. The winner will play the winner of No. 2 Bethany Lutheran College vs. No. 3 College of St. Scholastica on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. for the championship.
